Identity Magazine: Marwa Rakha's Special #Jan25 Revolution Coverage
March/April 2011
Salma Hassan – Alexandria
I was in Alexandria in Ka'ed Ibrahim Square! I had to be part of this revolution because I wanted to get rid of Mubarak and his regime. I wanted freedom! I used to have this fear of bringing a baby into that country and end up like Khaled Said or Sayed Belal who were an example of state police brutality and torture! I wanted my humanity back. The Egypt that I wanted to see an end to is a country where everyday people are dying of cancer, poverty, or torture by the police. We did not have any human rights what so ever.
I do not think I will ever get over the pain of seeing our own Egyptian policemen shooting our own Egyptian protesters while using all means of suppression like rubber/real bullets, tear gas and water hoses on peaceful unarmed Egyptians. It hurt seeing a big literary figure like Mr. Mohamed Abd El Koddous being arrested in the most humiliated way while Mubarak only cared about his son inheriting us like a herd of sheep or cows.
It was all worth it; I only realized that when Mubarak was kicked out and I only pray God to keep him alive a little longer to see him behind bars with all of his family and gang. I want to see sorrow, pain and humiliation his eyes…almost begging us to have mercy him.
I gladly learned that we – Egyptians – are not dead after all! Nothing is unchangeable! Nothing is impossible! We are strong! We are rich! The regime has been lying to us and coercing us into believing that we are poor and helpless! Now I have hope! I am a human being again!
