Radio Netherlands broadcasted an Arabic translation of the Artificial Virginity Hymen kit, and then Youm7 newspaper in Egypt announced that the product will be available on the Egyptian market for LE 83. Conservative parliament members in Egypt wanted the product banned and any exporter exiled or beheaded, and the news caused an uproar in the Egyptian street.
In the beginning I thought that the Chinese were brilliant with their market research and constant search for niche markets and unfulfilled needs. Then I found out that their artificial hymen kit is an adult toy for couples who wanted to spice up their love life; this was their primary audience – couples who wanted to play!

I am sure the manufacturers were pleasantly surprised when they stumbled upon their secondary audience – Middle Eastern people all over the world! What more could they have asked for? Here is a whole culture that is defined by what lies between a female's legs … honor, virtue, chastity, marriage, motherhood are all related to the hymen. Who cares about character, beliefs, attitude, ethics, and values?

Here is a culture that would do anything to avoid hearing the truth; ask your average Egyptian guy and he would tell you that he does not want to know and that he would rather be lied to because his ego-of-a-god cannot deal with the truth. I do not even know why they are angry now … hymen restoration procedures have been ongoing since the nineties, anal sex has replaced vaginal intercourse in many pre-marital relations, and people have been making out since the beginning of creation … why does a better cheaper more accessible lie offend them?

And why do Sheikhs make it sound as if all girls are sinful by nature and that the only thing that inhibited their lustful nature is a hymen? Why do they make it sound as though girls were waiting for this "golden opportunity" to have sex? Don't they believe that there are many girls who just want to preserve their virginity until they get married because they WANT TO as opposed to they HAVE TO? Their reactions are just pathetic … another reflection of the hypocrisy of a shallow make-belief virtuous male-dominated society!
Whether the artificial virginity kit is fact or fiction, the reactions to its existence shed more light on the bleak semi hopeless picture of our Middle Eastern ostrich burying its stupid head in the sand!
